Landscape Construction Foreman

Compensation: $30 Hourly
starting rate $30+/hour, commensurate with experience

Love & Carrots is DC’s foremost urban farming and edible landscaping company. We design, install and maintain urban farms, vegetable gardens, and native landscapes across DC, MD, and VA.

Love & Carrots is hiring an experienced Landscape Construction Foreman to lead installation crews in building high-quality landscapes. Our projects include natural and manufactured stone patios, permeable pavers, fencing, pergolas, retaining walls, raised garden beds, drainage and stormwater management, and native landscapes.

We're looking for a qualified individual to bring a high level of landscape construction experience to our team. Successful applicants will take pride in craftsmanship, lead by example, enjoy teaching others, and want to be part of a great, collaborative group.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work alongside and under the direction of Lead Foreman and Construction Manager as needed.
  • Lead a crew of 2–4 on residential landscape construction projects of all sizes.
  • Translate landscape designs into high-quality patios, retaining walls, drainage systems, fences, raised beds, planting beds, and other landscape features.
  • Coordinate daily tasks, materials, equipment, and jobsite logistics.
  • Train and mentor crew members while maintaining a positive, productive work environment.
  • Communicate with Project Managers and Designers regarding progress, scheduling, and any field issues.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Ensure project sites are maintained in an orderly fashion and sites are left clean.
  • Operate and oversee the use of large trucks and construction equipment including skid steers, mini loaders, compact excavators, and power equipment.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Innovation: improve crew efficiency, expand company capabilities, and increase the quality of our final product
  • Estimate Accuracy: Collect site data used for accurate estimating
  • Systems: Identify areas for improvement and communicate to management, help craft new systems and solutions as needed

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional landscape construction experience.
  • 2+ years of crew leadership or foreman experience.
  • Strong knowledge of hardscape installation, grading, drainage, ICPI permeable pavers, stone masonry, carpentry, irrigation.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and layout projects accurately.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and experience and ability to safely drive work vehicles including larger trucks and trailer

Physical demands of the role:

  • Ability to repeatedly lift heavy (75lbs +) objects throughout the day.
  • Ability to perform frequent high-intensity manual labor including pushing, pulling, and lifting various equipment and materials.
  • Ability to accomplish physically demanding work for the entire day in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and walk for long periods of time.
  • Experience with and ability to use various hand tools such as shovels, rakes, saws, ladders, and pruning shears, etc.
  • Experience with and ability to use power tools and machinery, including: excavator, skidsteer, circular saw, drills/drivers, augers, sod cutters etc.

Preferred Experience
(not required, but strongly favored)

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Compensation

  • Starting rate: $30/hr +, commensurate with experience

Schedule

The crew generally works four 10-hour days during the main season, switching to 5 day weeks for the winter. Start times listed below are subject to shifts based on weather or available sunlight:

Shoulder seasons (March - May, September - November):

  • Monday - Thursday 7:30AM - 6PM

Summer hours (June - August)

  • Monday - Thursday 6/6:30AM - 4:30/5PM

Winter hours (December - February)

  • Monday - Friday 8:30 - 4:30
